There are two classes in KTS Academy dedicated to meeting the needs of pupils with complex needs: Green Class in KTS2 on the lower school site and U4 in KTS3 on the upper school site. Pupils in these classes follow a sensory based curriculum and benefit from high staffing levels.
Classroom staff liaise with families, Physiotherapists, Speech and Language Therapists, Occupational Therapists and School Nurses to ensure that staff working with pupils are aware of their individual needs. Pupils may join one of these classes when they start at KTS Academy or transfer into Green Class or U4 at any time during their school career if it is felt that they would benefit from a sensory based curriculum.
Both classes have regular access to onsite hydrotherapy and rebound therapy sessions. In KTS2 pupils in Green Class can access a light stimulation room directly from the classroom – which is also adjacent to the soft play room. The KTS3 building has recently been developed and remodelled to include a large main classroom for pupils in U4 with smaller adjacent rooms which are currently being developed as individual working or sensory areas.
Each pupil is set individual goals specific to their needs and abilities and these are updated regularly – at least once a term. Developing communication skills is a high priority, with each child being encouraged to communicate using their preferred method/s which may include speech, body language, Makaton signing, Objects of Reference, timetable symbols, Eye Gaze computers or electronic communication aids. For some pupils, daily physiotherapy programmes and sensory integration programmes are also a high priority, and wherever possible these are carried out within the classroom.
Pupils in Green Class and U4 have the opportunity to take part in a wide range of individual and small group sensory activities where the emphasis is on learning through experience, exploration and enjoyment.
We want school to be a positive experience for our pupils!
