Promoting life long learning through quality of education, respect and equality for all

Early Years (KTS 1)

The Early Years Foundation Stage is how the Government and early years professionals describe the time in your child’s life between birth and age 5. It is a very important stage as it provides the foundation for future learning and successes. Experiences should be happy, active, exciting, fun and secure; and support their development, care and learning needs.
At KTS Academy pupils generally access the provision until End of Key Stage 1 (7 years old) as we feel this best meets their developmental needs.

There is a statutory framework in place to ensure legal welfare requirements are met and which guide professionals in the 7 Areas of Learning and Development.
There are 3 Prime Areas –
Communication and Language, Physical Development, Personal, Social and Emotional Development and 4 specific areas – Literacy, Mathematics, Understanding the World, Expressive Arts and Design.

At KTS we plan and deliver all 7 areas through a broad and balanced curriculum, with a specific focus on the Prime Areas as these are the most essential for healthy development and future learning. We also appreciate that all of our pupils are unique and adapt our curriculum to meet their interests, abilities and needs in a more holistic approach. Our pupil’s are encouraged to learn by playing and exploring, being active, and through creative and critical thinking (within their capabilities) both indoors and outdoors.

We work closely with other agencies, such as Speech and Language Therapists, Physiotherapists, Occupational Therapists, and Community Nursing Teams to ensure all your child’s needs are met.

Communication is a major focus and staff are trained in delivering and teaching Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) techniques such as  picture exchange communication system (PECS), Makaton signs and Voice Output Communication Aids (VOCAS).

Supporting pupils sensory needs is also a major focus. We provide sensory assessments and access to specialist resources and programmes where required. Each pupil has an Individual Learning Programme (ILP) which identifies their ‘next steps’ in learning and incorporates therapy based programmes. Your child will have access to specialist provision and resources such as Hydrotherapy, Rebound Therapy, Sensory Integration room, Light room and Soft Play.

We pride ourselves on our positive links and relationships with our families and  will strive to keep you informed about your child's experiences and progress. We will keep in contact daily through home school diaries and are only a phone call away if you have any questions or concerns. We will share your child’s termly targets with you and also ask you to contribute towards them if you so wish. We will share photographs, certificates, ‘Wow’ moments, examples of your child’s work etc, with you weekly through scrap books which we encourage you to contribute to also. We will send home copies of your child’s learning stories for you to read and comment upon and you will be invited into school once a term for a Family Contact Event e.g.- to watch a performance, to work alongside your child in the classroom, to attend a
progress update meeting, coffee morning, fundraising  event. You  will  receive a detailed annual report and have the opportunity to discuss this in further detail at your child’s Annual Review meeting. Your child’s progress will be monitored daily through observations and working alongside staff members. We will have a large range of evidence to share with you such as written records, photographs and videos.
