In KTS 2 we have 5 classes - White, Orange, Purple, Grey and Green Class. We ensure that each class has a high staff:pupil ratio and some ppils have 1:1 support, dependng on their needs.
KTS 2 operates a curriculum, which is designed to inspire children through its creativity. Each half term, pupils explore a different topic or theme. When subjects are taught, they are grouped togther. For example, History and Geography are referred to as Humanities and Art, Music and Drama are referred to as the Creative Arts. This cross-curricular approach to teaching and learning provides pupils with a broad and balanced curriculum appropriate to their needs. Topic and themes are supported and enhanced with "wow" moments such as visits from the theatre, music groups or educational outings. Science, where possible, is linked to the topic and is taught in a discrete lesson.
For those pupils following an adapted version of the National Curricumlum; Literacy and Numeracy sessions and activities are delivered in whole class or small groups to promote and develop skills in phonics, early reading, writing, number, shape and space. We use Read Write Inc. and Numicon to support this.
For pupils who are accessing a more sensory or communication based curriculum; communication and cognition sessions and activities are used to explore and experience sensory stories, mark making, making requests using objects of reference, communication aids (including eye-gaze computers), photographs, signing or symbols and learn to participate in action songs and number rhymes. Some sessions are supported or delivered by the Speech and Language Therapy team.
All pupils access a range of aditional activities which enhance their curriculum, depending on their individual needs. These activities include hydrotherapy, rebound therapy, physiotherapy, sensory intergration, swimming sessions at the local swimming baths, soft play, light room, ICT - including the use of iPads, computers, touch screens and switch adapted equipment. Where pupil needs require support from other agencies, they are supported with additional programmes or care plans from te Speech and Language Therapy team, physiotherapists, school nurse or Occupational Therapist. Staff within the department work closely with these professionals to provide support for the pupils.
