Our Learning Pathways

At KTS Academy, we provide a structured yet flexible journey from the Early Years through to Post-16. We offer four distinct pathways, each designed with high expectations and a clear focus on the lifelong success and happiness of our pupils. Every route is crafted to ensure our young people thrive, feel valued, and are fully prepared for a purposeful and rewarding adulthood. Each child’s journey is guided by their Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP). We pride ourselves on high-quality teaching and a bespoke approach that identifies and dismantles the specific barriers to learning that each individual may face.

At KTS Academy, a pathway is a guide, not a limit

Engagement Pathway

This pathway is designed for a diverse group of young people who navigate significant cognitive challenges, often accompanied by difficulties in mobility, sensory processing, and communication. Because these pupils require a high level of tailored support to engage with the world, our approach focuses on experiential and developmental learning experiences that meet their unique needs.

Learning within this pathway is driven by the pupil’s own interests and personal motivators. We understand that our learners often follow their own agendas and may find traditional, adult-directed activities difficult to sustain. To address this, we utilise detailed Engagement Profiles to inform a curriculum that captures their attention and builds "stamina" for learning. We value sensory exploration as a primary and valid method of interpreting the environment. By harnessing what naturally excites each child, we create a bridge between their internal world and the learning opportunities we provide.

Our pedagogy is rooted in a play-based approach that prioritises the development of transferable skills through cross-contextual learning. We do not teach skills in isolation; instead, we ensure that progress in skills such as communication, independence, and self-care is generalised across various environments. Through carefully scaffolded play, we help them navigate the complexities of choice-making and change, fostering the resilience and independence necessary for their long-term happiness and success.

Pre Formal Pathway

Pupils on this pathway are supported through an approach that bridges the gap between interest-led discovery and structured learning. While these learners often prefer to follow their own agendas within this pathway staff develop sessions and actively support pupils to attend groups and circle times for increasing periods, building their tolerance of spending time with others.

A core priority of this pathway is the expansion of the pupil’s world. While every learner is supported by an Engagement Profile, we proactively provide a range of diverse experiences that encourage them to venture beyond their immediate preferences. This "stretch" in engagement is vital for developing transferable skills, allowing pupils to apply their learning to new environments and social situations with growing confidence. Through high-quality teaching and tailored support, we empower our young people to transition from solitary exploration to collaborative, purposeful activity.

For pupils ready to access structured elements of the National Curriculum, such as Read Write Inc (RWI) or White Rose Maths, we provide highly personalised opportunities that sit alongside our play-based framework. To maintain engagement and maximise potential, these sessions are delivered in short, intensive 1:1 bursts or in small groups rather than extended traditional lessons. This bespoke approach ensures that academic progression never comes at the expense of a pupil’s wellbeing or their right to an education that is motivating, fun, and matched to their unique developmental stage.

Semi Formal Pathway

This pathway represents a transition where pupils begin to engage in subject-specific learning. We recognise that these learners often face barriers regarding abstract concepts, sequential memory, and the generalisation of understanding. To address this, our curriculum utilises a hands-on, experiential learning model that builds directly upon the play-based foundations established in our earlier pathways. By grounding academic concepts in tangible, first-hand experiences, we ensure that learning is meaningful, memorable, and, rooted where possible, in the "real world."

This pathway provides a curriculum that remains motivating and fun while increasing demand. We provide a high-quality, tailored environment where pupils can flourish either in small groups or through intensive 1:1 adult support. This structure is designed to strengthen concentration and working memory, empowering pupils to attend to tasks for sustained periods

For foundation subjects, pupils follow the frameworks set out in our Formal Pathway, meticulously adapted to meet their individual developmental levels. Our approach ensures that even as learning becomes more structured, it remains deeply experiential.

Formal Pathway

The Formal Pathway is designed for pupils who demonstrate the cognitive readiness to engage with subject-specific learning through more traditional teaching approaches. These learners typically work at Year 1 of the National Curriculum or above however this can fluctuate by subject and our highly specialist teachers are able to adapt the learning to suit a range of cognitive levels. While they are working significantly below age-related expectations, we maintain high ambitions for their progress, providing a high-quality, adapted National Curriculum that broadens their horizons and introduces them to the rich diversity of a wide range of subjects.

Pupils on this pathway demonstrate the ability to maintain attention for sustained periods, allowing for deeper exploration of ideas. Our approach remains rooted in the belief that education should be motivating and fun, even as it becomes more formal. By blending traditional instructional methods with hands-on opportunities, we open our pupils' eyes to the possibilities offered by the National Curriculum, ensuring they feel empowered to reach their full potential within our school community and beyond.
