We deliver our curriculum through a topic-based approach rooted in the foundational themes of Understanding the World (inc Science). This structure is informed by research into Special Educational Needs pedagogy, which suggests that thematic learning provides the connective tissue necessary for pupils to make sense of abstract concepts. By linking subjects together under a single thematic umbrella, we reduce the cognitive load associated with switching between unrelated topics, allowing pupils to focus their energy on deeper engagement and understanding.
For our learners in the Semi-Formal and Formal pathways, this model facilitates joined-up learning. It allows students to see how subjects are interconnected, empowering them to apply skills gained in one area to a completely different context. This deliberate focus on cross-contextual application is vital for the development of transferable skills, ensuring that learning is not just memorised in isolation but is functional and relevant to the real world.
Our curriculum topics currently operate on a three-year cycle designed to meet and support the core aims of the National Curriculum.
