Preparing for Adulthood

At KTS Academy, Preparing for Adulthood (PfA) is the golden thread woven through our entire curriculum. From the moment a pupil joins us, we begin equipping them with the essential skills to live a life of purpose and fulfillment. We treat every PfA strand (Employment, Independent Living, Community Inclusion, and Health) with equal weight, tailoring our approach to meet each learner’s specific journey. Alongside the embedding of PfA into the everyday student experience we also support this with discrete teaching sessions in PSHE which supports pupil's understanding in areas such personal safety, emotional wellbeing, and managing physical health, supporting and empowering them to make informed choices.

This commitment looks different for every pupil: while one learner might develop vocational skills through workplace visits and CV writing, another may focus on the foundational health and sensory regulation needed to engage with the world around them. Whether accessing local leisure facilities or mastering a new communication tool, our mission remains the same: to provide a diverse range of high-quality opportunities that challenge and empower our pupils at every stage of their journey. Because every pupil has individualised needs, we utilise all available information and professional expertise to ensure every outcome is both suitable and realistic.

To celebrate and formalise the skills developed during their time at KTS, pupils work towards ASDAN accreditations in Personal Progress or Employability as part of their Post-16 curriculum. These nationally recognised qualifications provide a tangible record of achievement across the four PfA strands, ensuring every student leaves with a portfolio that reflects their unique strengths and readiness for the future.

When the time comes for pupils and their families to start thinking about life beyond KTS Academy we facilitate Leavers Reviews that bring together parents, pupils (where appropriate), and professionals to explore all possible routes forward.
