At KTS Academy, we believe that communication is a fundamental right. We ensure that communication and language support is woven into every aspect of school life, tailored specifically to the individual needs and developmental stage of each pupil.
To empower our learners, we adopt a robust Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) approach. This involves the integrated use of various communication methods, ensuring that every pupil has a functional way to express themselves. Our staff are skilled in using a combination of:
Verbal Language and Makaton Signing: Supporting speech with signs and gestures.
Visual Supports: Using Symbols, photographs, and Objects of Reference (OOR) to provide context and understanding.
Dynamic Display Apps: Utilising specialist software on iPads, such as TD Snap, to facilitate communication.
Where appropriate, we use Information and Communication Technology (ICT) to further enhance access across the curriculum. This includes the use of Voice Output Communication Aids (VOCAs), such as:
Eye-Gaze Systems: Allowing pupils to communicate and control their environment using only their eye movements.
Switch-Adapted Equipment: Ensuring pupils with physical limitations can trigger speech or interact with software.
iPads and Tablets: Portable, versatile tools for real-time interaction.
To maintain the highest standards of support, all KTS Academy staff receive comprehensive, ongoing training in AAC. We work in close partnership with the NHS Speech and Language Therapy Team, who play a central role in delivering training and ensuring our communication strategies remain at the forefront of best practice. This collaborative approach ensures that every pupil is supported effectively, allowing their personality and preferences to shine through.
