At KTS Academy, we believe that a holistic approach is essential to ensuring our pupils' needs are met. We work in close collaboration with a wide range of external agencies and healthcare professionals, ensuring that therapeutic and medical support is seamlessly integrated into the school day.
Specialist Health and Therapy Teams
To support the complex requirements of our learners, we host several NHS and private specialist services on-site:
Nursing Care: We are privileged to have a school nurse from James Cook University Hospital on-site at all times, providing dedicated support for pupils with complex medical needs.
Physiotherapy: The NHS Physiotherapy team visits several times a week. Operating from a dedicated room with specialist equipment, they assess pupils and collaborate with staff to deliver bespoke physical programmes.
Occupational Therapy (OT): We provide a dual-layered OT service. We commission private specialist support from Treetops Occupational Therapy, where our therapist, Jill, works alongside staff to design and train teams in sensory processing programmes. Additionally, the NHS OT service visits regularly to manage specialist seating and standing frames.
Speech and Language Therapy (SALT): The SALT team is on-site weekly, working with our communication leads to incorporate speech and language targets directly into the KTS Curriculum. We also work with a specialist Dysphagia SALT team to ensure staff are expertly trained in supporting pupils with eating and drinking requirements.
Mental Health and Family Support
We recognise that emotional well-being is the foundation for learning. We work closely with LD CAMHS (Learning Disabilities Child and Adolescent Mental Health Services) to support our pupils’ mental health and behavioural needs. By hosting regular meetings with families and professionals, we ensure a consistent and supportive approach between home and school.
Furthermore, we maintain strong links with Social Care. We regularly welcome social workers into the Academy, facilitating collaborative meetings with parents and carers to ensure families are fully supported.
On-Site Medical Clinics
We understand that hospital environments can be challenging and overwhelming for many of our pupils. To reduce anxiety and minimise time away from the classroom, we host regular on-site clinics. This allows professionals including Paediatricians, Dietitians, and Consultant Psychiatrists to see pupils in a familiar, comfortable setting. This approach not only supports the well-being of the child but also ensures medical oversight is perfectly aligned with their educational experience.
