Sensory Integration

Sensory processing is the ability to organise information received through touch, movement, sight, and sound to respond appropriately to the world around us. When a child has sensory processing difficulties, they may find it challenging to take in or organise this information. This can significantly affect their behaviour, the way they learn and move, how they relate to others, and their overall self-esteem.

We recognise that many individuals with autism and other specialist needs experience these challenges. At KTS Academy, we use Sensory Integration to help pupils regulate their sensory systems, providing them with the stability they need to engage with their learning.

To provide the highest level of support, we collaborate with a specialist Occupational Therapist from Treetops Occupational Therapy, who visits the school every Tuesday. The therapist designs bespoke "sensory diets" and personalised plans for students who require targeted support.

Our staff are fully trained in sensory integration and are skilled in delivering these individualised plans. Our Sensory Integration Room, contains a variety of specialist equipment to support the pupils with their regulation. This dedicated space allows pupils to complete their specific sensory programmes and find additional support when they feel dysregulated.

Sensory support is not limited to our specialist rooms; it is woven into the fabric of the school day. We ensure that sensory needs are catered for within the classroom, where pupils have immediate access to resources that help them stay regulated. By carefully integrating a sensory diet into a pupil’s individual curriculum, we can significantly increase their engagement and ensure they feel comfortable and ready to learn throughout the day.
