We are proud to have collaborated with Sunningdale School on an innovative research project exploring how engagement-driven play can support children with Complex Learning Difficulties to tolerate demand and uncertainty. This groundbreaking work recognises that, as UNICEF (2018) states, 'Play is one of the most important ways in which young children gain essential knowledge and skills'.
For our pupils accessing the Engagement Pathway at KTS Academy, and those on the Informal Explore Pathway at Sunningdale School, developing the ability to tolerate uncertainty and demand is a key attribute that underpins their learning and development. Through carefully structured play experiences that prioritise engagement and enjoyment, we are discovering new ways to help our pupils build resilience, confidence, and the skills they need to navigate their world.
This research is helping us to deepen our understanding of how play can be a powerful tool for unlocking potential in children with complex needs, and the findings are directly informing our practice to ensure every child benefits from the most effective approaches. The findings are already shaping our practice and improving outcomes for our pupils.
You can read more about our research findings in the Laurel Trust Research Results Volume 4, 2025.
At KTS Academy, we are proud to be working towards OPAL (Outdoor Play and Learning) accreditation as part of our School Development Plan. OPAL is a transformative approach that enhances the quality and variety of outdoor play experiences for our pupils. Through this programme, we are creating richer, more engaging outdoor environments where children can explore, take appropriate risks, develop their physical skills, and build confidence in a safe and supportive setting. Our commitment to OPAL reflects our belief that outdoor play is essential for children's wellbeing, social development, and learning. We are working closely with OPAL trainers to audit our outdoor spaces, develop new play opportunities, and ensure that every child benefits from high-quality outdoor experiences throughout the school day. As we progress towards accreditation, we will continue to involve pupils, staff, and families in shaping outdoor provision that truly meets the needs of our unique learners.
