Encounters

As part of the KTS Careers Curriculum, our students are visit employers to find out about local industry and jobs and also invite them in to school to talk about their roles and past experiences within their job sector.

Contact with employers is really valuable for our students as they learn about opportunities that are accessible for them and so raises aspirations for employment. It gives students a taster of the different jobs available in different sectors and so far we have identified students are interested in hospitality, catering, engineering, retail, warehouse work, transport and art. We are trying to visit employers for each sector of interest. The students are enjoying them and have been asking some excellent questions!

Robertson Construction Visit

Students in U9 enjoyed a visit to Robertson’s Construction site in Middlesbrough. They had a tour of the site and learnt about the different roles in construction. Students really enjoyed the visit, Nathan said ‘I enjoyed learning how the construction started, finding out what it is like working on site and seeing the machinery work’ and Sam said ‘‘I enjoyed looking at the different machines and the buildings under construction.

ASDA Talk

Claire from ASDA came in to talk to some students at KTS3 about different job roles available such as administration, checkout cashiers and home shopping. Students enjoyed listening to Claire and spoke positively about what they had learnt after the session.

Fire Brigade Visit

Students at KTS+ went to visit Redcar Fire Station to learn about how the station is managed and organised to provide vital services in the local community. Students also learnt about the different job roles within the Fire Service and were able to use some of the equipment and look around the engines. The visit was thoroughly enjoyed by both students and staff and we would like to thank everyone at the station for taking the time to show us around.

PD Ports Visit

Some students from KTS+ enjoyed a visit to PD Ports.  The visit was organised as part of our Preparing for Adulthood curriculum, so that our students experience and understand jobs within our local area. Students were shown around the site by PD Ports staff. They learnt about the running of the Port, the different jobs that people do there and the history of the Port. They also took part in a boat trip on the River Tees and steered the boat!

Steve Cockerline, Site Manager for PD Ports, sent us this message after the visit: ‘I can honestly say it has been our pleasure all of my students were outstanding. The level of enthusiasm and engagement was outstanding and I know I can speak for Scott it was a truly enjoyable morning. Please pass on to all of the students and staff my thanks as it is through their engagement that the experience is created.’   Everyone thoroughly enjoyed the visit and could recall lots of facts and information they had learnt afterwards.

British Steel Visit

The students visited British Steel at Skinningrove, where they learned all about the steel manufacturing industry and the jobs people do there. It was eye-opening for the students to get a glimpse inside industry. The students found out about apprenticeships and entry level routes into manufacturing and engineering. Thank you so much to Steve Close and Martin for making us so welcome and to the chef for the delicious cakes!

Galiford Try Visit

Students visited the Galliford Try construction site in Brotton today as part of the 'Construction Open Day' to raise awareness of careers in the sector. They made us really welcome and talked about the jobs that are available in the construction sector and the skills that are needed. The students enjoyed their site induction and looking round the site at the new social housing project for warden supported accommodation for those aged 55+ in Brotton.
